Understanding Emergency Management and How to Get Engaged

Date: October 13, 2026
Time: 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Price: FREE

Disasters don’t wait for a plan to be in place, which is why building one now is one of the most powerful steps a community can take. This webinar is designed as a launchpad to help your agency take its first steps towards developing a disaster plan and directly supports your work on Section 7 of the Community Action Plan on Disaster Preparedness.

Emergency management is more than responding to disasters. It is a collaborative, whole-community effort to prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the impacts of all hazards. This session will walk through the emergency management landscape at the federal, state, and local levels, with a focus on Illinois’ evolving risk environment and the specific challenges facing vulnerable and at-risk populations.

You’ll leave with a clear understanding of:

  • Who’s responsible for what: the roles of emergency management agencies and partner organizations
  • The emerging threats and hazards shaping risk in Illinois today
  • Why a whole-community approach is essential to real resilience
  • Practical, actionable ways you and your organization can get involved in preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation

Whether you are just beginning to think about a disaster plan or looking to strengthen existing community preparedness efforts, this session gives you the grounding and the next steps to move from awareness to action.
