In 2008, ICADC collaborated with the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) to offer Housing Quality Standards (HQS) training and certification to CAA’s. This training encompassed the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s housing inspection criteria which is used in numerous programs including those in which communities use block grant dollars for rehabilitation or HOME funds, Rental Housing Support Programs, Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher units. This was a three-day training course held December 15-17, 2008 with approximately 40 attendees for all three days. It is ICADC’s plan to offer this training in 2010, as it has proven to be useful to CAA’s as weatherization programs boom. Furthermore, the HQS Inspector certification also proves to be a great ancillary income stream for agencies as well.
ICADC also sponsored an all day training on how to become a HUD certified housing counseling agency on July 22, 2009. This certification is beneficial to member agencies in that it allows them to apply for funding from HUD in the areas of credit counseling, reverse mortgage counseling, etc. Information included HUD regulations regarding housing counseling agencies, criteria required in application submission, and an overview of the entire application process. Participants also had a chance to review a successful application and learn about additional technical assistance opportunities available. The presenter was Erica Page from Housing Action Illinois. There 17 people from 10 various agencies in attendance.
ICADC plans to offer this training again in 2010 focusing more on the aspects of credit counseling although how to become a HUD certified agency will again be covered within the training.
